Branding: Choosing a Name – Checklist

This is part 4 of a 4 part series.

To recap, here are the steps involved in Choosing a Name
1. Learn about the different types of names . Read Part 1.
2. Brainstorm name ideas and name combinations. Read Part 2.
3. Filter out possibilities by eliminating any names to be avoided. Read Part 3.

Finally, you will want to analyze the potential new name with this handy list.

Function

  • States objective – Does the name say or at-least hint at what it is? This will be helpful in building a brand a bit more quickly.
  • Contains keywords – This is helpful for search engine optimization (getting on top in Google).
  • Simplicity – Is the name simple or complicated? Is it hard to spell?

Uniqueness

  • Uniqueness- Is the name available as a domain name? Is it available on Social Networks?
  • Legality – Is the name already trademarked?

Personality

  • Offensive or Weird-ed – Does the name have a double meaning or undesirable effect. Read part 3 if you have not done so already.
  • Does the domain have personality? No one likes a boring name.
  • What message does the name (by itself) convey?

OK! By now you should have at least a couple good names figured out so go and BUY a domain name already!
